The basics

What is MCP?

1

An open standard

The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to external data and tools — like a USB-C port for AI applications.

2

Servers expose tools

Each MCP server wraps a product or dataset — GitHub, Postgres, Google Drive — and exposes its actions as tools an AI can call.

3

You plug them in

Add a server to your MCP client (Claude, Cursor, and others), and your assistant can suddenly read, write, and act across your stack.

Questions

Frequently asked

MCP is an open protocol that standardizes how AI applications connect to external data sources and tools. Instead of every AI app building custom integrations, a single MCP server can be reused across any MCP-compatible client.

Most MCP clients — including Claude, Cursor, and other coding assistants — read a configuration file where you list the servers you want. Each server's documentation shows the exact configuration snippet, whether it runs locally on your machine or connects to a hosted URL.

Local servers run on your own machine and communicate over standard input/output — great for files, Git repos, and databases you control. Remote servers are hosted by a vendor and reached over HTTPS, often with OAuth login — great for SaaS products like CRMs or meeting tools.

Many are open source and free. Some require an API key or a paid plan with the underlying service (for example, a search API or a SaaS product). Always check the server's own documentation for pricing and permissions before connecting it to real data.

We are starting with a curated set and will open submissions soon. If you maintain an MCP server, email us with your server's name, repository or website, and a one-line description.

No. MCP North is an independent directory. The design takes inspiration from Anthropic's aesthetic, but the site is not affiliated with or endorsed by Anthropic.
